NATIONAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SUBMITTED FOR PLANNING APPROVAL

BDP, in association with OCMA, were appointed as architects for the new hospital last year by the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board. The Planning Application for the new 7 storey hospital building was lodged with An Bord Pleanála on the 10th August and it is expected the new hospital will be completed in 2019.
The new building will be a world-class facility providing secondary paediatric services for the greater Dublin area and specialist tertiary services for the country. It is the largest, most complex and significant capital investment project ever undertaken in the healthcare sector in Ireland. It will bring together three existing children’s hospitals, and it will be tri-located on one campus with St James’s adult hospital and a planned future maternity hospital. This tri-location model of service delivery is being undertaken to ensure the best healthcare outcomes for all.
The new children’s hospital will comprise 473 beds, including 60 Critical Care beds, 18 state-of-the-art Operating Theatres, and advanced diagnostics and intervention facilities. The design of all clinical areas is based on international health standards and guidelines. The project also provides a 52 bed Family Accommodation Unit and a Children’s Innovation and Research Centre, in adjacent stand-alone buildings on the St. James’s Hospital Campus.
Health Minister Varadkar said: “This breathtaking design does its job really well. It’s clear from the open-plan building, the gardens, the sports facilities, and the state-of-the-art wards that this is a unique building”.
