The North Dublin Surgical Hub is a new facility which forms part of the HSE’s national strategy to expand capacity in response to growing elective surgery needs across the country. The development forms part of nationwide set of seven surgical hubs which are designed to reduce waiting lists and waiting times.
This Surgical Hub transformed an existing distribution building on the Swords Business Campus into a modern healthcare environment incorporating operating theatres, procedure suites, recovery rooms, consultation rooms, and a range of ancillary support spaces. The overall project encompasses 3,800sqm across a single storey while retaining enough capacity to accommodate a future development of additional operating theatres.
The constraints imposed when designing and building within an existing building can be considerable, proactive collaboration across the Design and Build Team helped to support OCMA’s architectural approach. This enabled a clear and contemporary design to be achieved within the architectural character of the existing campus. Rapid, modern methods of construction were employed to advance the project delivery and also support the team in achieving their targeted A3 Building Energy Rating.
The Surgical Hub provides a new purpose-built facility which improves access to care for the residents of North Dublin and the surrounding areas and alleviate pressure on the participating hospitals. The development successfully demonstrates the ability to adaptively reuse existing buildings to create modern healthcare infrastructure.
