Wicklow Library and Archive occupies a sustainably upgraded commercial building in the town center, transforming it into a cultural hub. A double-height stone entrance extends the public realm, while carefully designed interiors feature custom seating that conceals services, creating open, distinct spaces for adults, children, reading, and archives. Four key interventions bring in light and create a sense of volume.
The design retained only the entrances and vertical circulation of the former bank building, addressing low ceiling heights with a double-height entrance and a four-story atrium. These features introduce light and space, with the atrium serving as a visual focal point. The layout maximizes natural light and bay views, particularly in the reading room and exhibition areas, with saw-tooth desks which reach out towards the bay.
This project is a prime example of adaptive reuse, transforming a commercial building previously reserved for business customers into a public library and county archive. It offers free access to services for all citizens, revitalizing the town and activating the urban space.
A standout feature of the design is the meticulous coordination of all visual elements by the architect, from the custom interiors and bookshelves to the signage and loose furniture. This creates a seamless environment, where vibrant furniture and signage contrast with clean white backgrounds, and each floor has a unique identity.

This project has produced WCC’s flagship library and is now the main feature of the streetscape bringing out the “wow” factor from the public. Non-readers have been receiving the “tour” to appreciate the finished product.
