The project involved the design and construction of a state-of-the-art Pharmacy facility for St. Vincent’s University Hospital which includes dispensary, administration, stores and aseptic compounding facilities as well as automated dispensing systems. The new Pharmacy is located on the roof level of the existing Main Ward Block within the St. Vincent’s University Hospital campus and was designed to link with existing facilities so as improve the distribution of pharmacy products while addressing the stringent security requirements associated with controlled substances.
The project is particularly successful for its ability to synthesise an extremely technical brief with high-quality, person-centred design. The hermetically sealed aseptic suite, which achieves Grade B compounding status and is essential to the hospital’s delivery of tailor-made chemotherapy treatments, is juxtaposed with the more open dispensary and administration areas. All areas benefit from high quality views and natural light.
OCMA worked closely with the client throughout the design and construction to achieve the precision which is essential to the pharmaceutical industry, and this attention to detail is apparent in all aspects of the design. The Pharmacy is an example of a holistic design strategy with building systems and robotics, architecture and interior design all working together to ensure that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
