James demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities both within the design team and as project leader on major projects within the practice. His experience in healthcare planning and his outstanding knowledge of the technology of building together with his teamworking skills have made him an extremely effective manager of large scale healthcare facilities delivering high quality projects and outcomes for our clients.

James has over 17 years’ experience across in a broad range of projects and at all stages of design and construction. He graduated from DIT Bolton Street as an Architectural Technologist in 1995, received his qualification in Architecture from Oxford Brooks, is a member of both the RIAI and the RIBA and is a registered architect in Ireland and the UK.

Since joining OCMA in 2013, James has been instrumental in the delivery of major healthcare infrastructural projects including the new Radiotherapy Treatment Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and the Mercers Institute for Successful Ageing at St James’s Hospital Dublin both of which are scheduled to open in 2016.

Prior to joining O’Connell Mahon, James was the Project Architect for the ‘Haemophilia & Hepatology In-Patient & Research Facility Extension’ at St. James’s Hospital completed in 2013. James has particular experience of working in a ‘live’ hospital environment having also been a senior member of the team responsible for the design & delivery of the 4 storey extension to Blackrock Clinic which was completed in September 2010.

 

 

 

Hanna Kickham

Hanna has considerable talent and commitment in the delivery of projects of architectural quality in both the public and the private sector. She has developed a broad knowledge of the design of healthcare facilities in particular, which is evident in the high standards she achieves in the projects she leads. Hanna has exceptional skills as an architect and design team leader and applies herself to all her projects and tasks with a diligence and perseverance that delivers successful outcomes and results for her clients.

Hanna graduated from the University College Dublin in 2000, completed her professional practice at UCD in 2005, is a member of the RIAI, and is a registered Architect. Hanna has also completed a postgraduate diploma in Construction Project Management from Trinity College Dublin, which has enhanced her experience in management techniques and leadership in the construction sector.

She joined O’Connell Mahon Architects in March 2010 with extensive experience on a wide range of building types, including educational buildings, commercial retail centres, residential buildings and public infrastructure projects. Experience included the development of numerous campus and town masterplans. Since then she has made a unique contribution to major healthcare projects including the National Children’s Hospital and the Radiotherapy Treatment Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital. She is responsible for the delivery of a 69 bed Nursing Home at Maryfield Nursing Home, Chapelizoid and was the D&B lead for the delivery of the Mental Health Unit at St.Loman’s, Mullingar.

Hanna has been instrumental in the delivery of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, which was completed in 2021, acting as Project Architect during all stages, from initial design through to project completion.

 

 

 

Kevin Larkin

Kevin has a broad range of experience in delivering excellence in design construction and building technology. He is particularly effective in the role of construction quality control and management. Kevin’s breadth of experience includes  detailed design and delivery of complex public healthcare projects notably the 17,000 square meter National Rehabilitation Hospital where he provided enhanced onsite supervision to manage and coordinate the inspection and quality control of the building works.

 

Kevin provides leadership in the area of building construction within O Connell Mahon Architects and his knowledge of the nature and performance of products and materials underpins the development of high quality specification and detailed design and building inspection protocols within the practice.

 

Kevin graduated from Limerick Institute of Technology in 2003 joined O’Connell Mahon Architects in 2011 and was appointed as Associate Director in 2021

 

 

 

Declan O’Connell

Declan has almost 20 years’ experience in detailed design and construction technology, across a wide range of projects. Declan has overseen substantial building projects including large scale healthcare work such as the €40 million Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry and the €12million Pharmacy project at St. Vincent’s University Hospital: and complex technical residential remedial works at Glending Housing Estate in Wicklow. Declan drives consistency and excellence in the delivery of high standard building projects and is highly skilled in working within the design and construction team environment.

 

Attention to detail and quality in procurement are hallmarks of Declan’s work and he provides advice and leadership in the area of preparation of documents for tender construction procurement within the practice.

 

Declan graduated from Waterford Institute of in 2002 and joined O’Connell Mahon Architects in 2010 and was appointed as Associate Director in 2021.

 

 

Kate O’Hea

Kate O’Hea has been practicing with Brian O’Connell Architects since 1997. She is a member of the Royal Institute of Architects Ireland and has completed Accessibility Auditing training with University of Ulster.

Kate has a particular expertise within the practice on the delivery of healthcare projects with a particular emphasis on accessibility in clinical design. She is also responsible for overall professional development within the practice.

Kate has gained extensive experience working on a range of project types throughout her career with O’Connell Mahon Architects covering all stages of a project’s course, from design development to tender preparation and project handover. She has developed particular interest in the delivery of detailed medical planning elements and accessibility provisions on
projects within the health sector.

Kate was responsible for the healthcare planning and delivery of the the award winning Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore. She has acted as Project Architect for the Adolescent Unit extension at St Vincent’s Hospital Fairview; Ward Upgrade Works at the National Rehabilitation Hosptial Dun Laoghaire; new Outpatient’s Department at St Lukes’ Hosptial Kilkenny; and the extension to Limerick Regional Maternity Hospital. She has also worked as Clinical Architect at Community Nursing Units of Farranlea Road and Ballinacollig both in Cork.

Since successfully completing the Accessiblity Auditing course with University of Ulster Kate has had responsibility within the office for auditing all new projects for accessibility and the provisions of Part M of Building Regulations and delivering proficient submissions to local authorities for Disability Access Certificates for all projects commencing on site since 2010.

Kate has experience also in the design and delivery of community, educational and conservation projects; as Project Architect for the Courthouse at Blanchardstown, Dublin and for the Convent  for the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood in Ballinasloe; and as Assistant Project Architect for the Education Centre at the Law Society of Ireland and Castlecoote House and Demesne restoration works in Roscommon.
