The Bon Secours Day Ward and Oncology building was a significant, high-quality extension which allows Bon Secours Health System to provide a new entrance and a revitalised, contemporary identity at their Glasnevin Campus as well as a new Oncology Department and Clinical Day Ward.
The extension is presented as a rectilinear stone clad block running in front of the existing hospital building and resting on a darker stone plinth which opens towards the east at lower ground level into a glass enclosed entrance space. In contrast, the first-floor level, which is clad in a rippling, copper-finish panel, curves more prominently eastwards creating a tiered effect at the entrance façade and a natural canopy over the new entrance area at lower ground floor. This overhanging double height element acts as a counter to the rectilinear block creating movement along the façade and guiding visitors towards the entrance. The project’s limestone finish reflects the stone cladding found on the existing procedures unit to the north of the site together with the rendered plinth and cornice of the existing main building, whilst the copper-finish metal cladding of the curvilinear element compliments the hue and tones of the existing main building brickwork.
The project was designed to be constructed on a live hospital campus, seamlessly integrating with and enhancing the existing clinical services. It was carefully detailed so that strategic connections could be provided to the existing building with minimal disruption to existing services which were maintained throughout the construction phase.
Glasnevin’s Day Ward and Oncology Building provided a quality, patient focused environment while satisfying the clients’ technical and clinical requirements and delivers the added enhancement of a new contemporary façade and entrance on the hospital’s historic campus.
