O’Connell Mahon were commissioned by the Board of the Bon Secours Health Systems to set out the scope and direction for future development of the Bon Secours Hospital, at College Road, Cork, in the context of the national plan for the development of healthcare services.
The purpose of this project was to significantly expand the existing acute hospital campus in Cork by adding a 7 storey, 15000m2 development overlooking the river Lee, including Radiotherapy, Oncology, Ward Accommodation, Critical Care and Operating theatre facilities.
A key requirement of the brief was to connect to the existing 25,000m2 hospital accommodation horizontally to the new expansion whilst maintaining the campus through road which meanders down the steeply sloping site. The clear definition and separation of public and clinical circulation is central to the creation of a contemporary healthcare building for patients, visitors and staff alike. The resulting healthcare development “North Block Expansion” is set into the sloped landscape to the north of the site overlooking the river Lee.
The development includes a 2 Linear Accelerator treatment rooms as part of Radiotherapy Department, Oncology Day ward, Critical Care Unit, 3 Inpatient ward floors, a state-of-the-art surgical Department incorporating 4 No. Additional Operating Theatres incorporating dedicated Recovery & Support Areas topped with Dedicated enclosed Plant Floor.
All departments connected back to the existing hospital at each level and a hospital street linking the existing entrance block to the new north block foyer formed a defined circulation spine culminating in a naturally ventilated and light filled public café which maximises view to the Lee valley. This nonclinical breakout space by visitors, staff and patients
An integrated landscaping scheme addresses the amenity/landscape zoning adjacent to the River Lee to the north and includes a riverside walk. A glazed foyer links the primary horizontal and vertical circulation routes, and a series of link bridges connect the existing campus to the new block.
