Lisnaskea Health and Care Centre designed in conjunction with Isherwood+Ellis Architects, addresses the spatial and operational challenges which are often faced in the delivery of localised primary care services through a carefully organised layout that emphasises patient experience through the integration of natural light and landscape elements. This establishes a calming and therapeutic environment for patients and staff that enhances well-being and supports effective delivery of healthcare services.
The 3,500m² facility, located on a 2-hectare site, is a central healthcare hub for Lisnaskea and the surrounding area, supporting a network of 16 GPs and delivering services to approximately 25,000 people. By consolidating GP, Community, and Day Care services under one roof the development will enhance accessibility and expand the local provision of healthcare. Key services include Podiatry, Speech & Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Mental Health Services, and support for Older People. Designed to address the spatial challenges faced by rural GPs, the facility aims to accommodate the growing demand for healthcare services in the region.
The building presents a strong facade to the main road as a significant public building engaging positively with the local area. The Centre is predominantly single storey, with a two-storey pitched roof element which references the vernacular architecture of the area, and establishing a non-institutional caring image.
The building follows a clear organisational structure, centred around a public street that provides direct access from the town to the north and the visitor carpark to the south. This internal concourse connects all departments, while also clearly separating administrative and facilities management areas from the public clinical spaces.
Departments are organised around internal courtyards, enhancing wayfinding and legibility for patients and visitors while supporting staff observation in each area. Patient consultation and treatment rooms are positioned along the building’s perimeter, optimising access to views and natural light, while minimising the possibility of overlooking of rooms.
The design places a strong emphasis on integrating landscape and nature throughout the building. This approach creates a healing environment that provides a positive healthcare experience for all users.
