The Maryfield Nursing Home project involved the transformation of an outdated 1970s nursing home on the banks of the river Liffey into a modern, light-filled residential care home, while the existing facility remained fully operational throughout.
The project provided a new 4,000m2 extension and extensive refurbishment of the existing facility to provide 69 single bedrooms organized into four self-contained households which were arranged around courtyards and spacious common areas. The scheme also included a hair salon, library, café and refurbished chapel with accessible terraces, and roof gardens.
Situated on a beautiful sloping site on the banks of the River Liffey the design effectively turned the existing building around to face the river, taking advantage of the superior views which are one of the sites greatest assets. The building steps down the hill, offering captivating views of courtyards and gardens overlooking the water.
Each household has its own identity, and its own accessible secure external space, where previously access to the outdoors was restricted due to the sloped topography of the site. Looped corridors replaced dead ends to assist with way finding, encouraging movement while reducing isolation and improving passive observation.
The building has transformed the lives of the residents and staff, by taking full advantage of its unique location, maximising safe access to outdoor spaces and still retaining its original identity through the careful retention of key spaces.
