The National Rehabilitation Hospital, honoured with the 2021 RIAI Award for Best Universal Design, exemplifies the seamless integration of patient-focused architecture and natural surroundings.
This new 18,000m2 building provides 120 single rooms with ensuite facilities, living and social spaces. Therapy support services include a new Hydrotherapy Suite and Sports and Fitness Department comprising of a Sports Hall, Gym, Aerobics Studio, Shooting Range, a Therapy Pool, and a Lap Pool.
The layout of the wards is thoughtfully designed, positioning patient rooms primarily along the building’s perimeter, while central areas near courtyards house shared therapeutic services. This layout not only secures the environment but also fosters the relearning of daily routines critical to rehabilitation. Direct access to multiple outdoor areas from every ward integrates nature into the healing process, providing ideal settings for rehabilitation activities.
Recognizing that up to 80% of patients may be wheelchair users, the design was meticulously developed in collaboration with clients and user groups to address a broad range of patient needs, including physical, cognitive, communicative, and visual abilities.
The outcome is an inclusive and empowering environment reflecting the diversity of the hospital’s end users and one which breaks down unnecessary barriers, avoids isolation and encourages peer support.
