Radiation Oncology Building Phase 1

The new Phase 1 project for Radiation Oncology services at Beaumont Hospital was awarded to OCMA following and design and build competition to develop generic design models for radiation oncology services capable of being adapted for future units in cancer centres throughout the country.

The project at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin was one of two such projects completed as part of the Phase 1 development of the National Plan and is comprised of a three storey 5,200 sqm structure with links to the existing hospital at Beaumont.

The design responds to this requirement for flexibility by placing a three-storey atrium at the core of the building which provides natural light and ventilation and a warm pleasing reception area around which the circulation is arranged. This configuration ensures a quality internal environment independent of the surrounding site conditions. Externally the building is expressed as a solid stone clad box – a formally strong element which is effective in many conditions from existing dense sites to open greenfield campuses.

At Beaumont the unit is located at the open, north westerly corner of the campus where the solid stone block presents a strong formal element at the edge of the existing complex. The site layout and configuration allow for the seamless expansion and development of further radiation oncology facilities at Beaumont without impact on the NPRO or Beaumont hospital services and operations.

Internally, a layer of treatment rooms and examination rooms around the perimeter of the building and a top-lit visiting area at the centre of the plan allows for clear, intuitive wayfinding. The facilities are designed to achieve continuity of care for patients by creating a seamless patient pathway within the radiotherapy departments.

The outcome is an efficient and carefully designed generic layout for radiation oncology services, capable of being adapted for use on many sites throughout the country, yet providing a warm, patient friendly and efficient internal environment reflecting the needs of the oncology patient end users.
