Nenagh Hospital, part of the University of Limerick Hospital Group, is a protected structure included in the Record of Protected Structures in the North Tipperary Development Plan 2007. The hospital, built around 1935-36, features a detached mainly two-storey building, a single-storey entrance block, a separate church to the southeast, and an outpatient block to the northeast. Recent developments at the hospital honour its original design while ensuring the facility meets modern healthcare standards, preserving its essential role in regional health services.
This project involved the careful expansion and modernisation of the hospital’s operating suite, which did not meet best practice standards. The intervention includes a vertical service core, creating opportunities for future development to the south and addressing the need for enhanced bed accommodation. The reconfiguration also involved converting outdated ward spaces into a reception and recovery facility, seamlessly integrated with the new surgical suite.
The design approach respected the hospital’s original scale, massing, and finish, rearticulating its form to conserve its spirit while introducing contemporary elements. The development not only adheres to the Protected Development Plan but also ensures that the hospital remains a vital part of the region’s healthcare infrastructure, ready to serve future generations.
This project successfully balances historical conservation with modernisation, securing Nenagh Hospital’s continuing role in the provision of essential health services for the community.
