The New Children’s Hospital is a world class facility that will transform paediatric healthcare in Ireland. It is the largest healthcare building ever built in the state and will replace the three existing Children’s Hospitals. The hospital will provide all the paediatric secondary care to children in the local population as well as tertiary and quaternary care on a national basis, and in some specialities on an all-island basis.
Designed by BDP in association with OCMA, the hospital incorporates 320 inpatient bedrooms, 60 critical care bedrooms, 93-day beds, an emergency department, imaging department, 20 operating theatres, outpatients departments, therapy areas, a hydrotherapy pool, hospital school, an education centre, family support facilities, parents overnight accommodation, pharmacy and pathology departments an elevated helipad and 1000 car parking spaces.
OCMA have shared the leadership of the project from inception, act as Contract Administration/Employers Representative and Assigned Certifier, and are responsible for the design and delivery of the Operating Theatre, Intensive Care and Pathology Departments, integration of large complex Medical Equipment, Link Tunnels and interface areas with St. James’s Hospital.
The design focuses on creating a welcoming, child friendly, family focused therapeutic environment in a distinctive architectural form. Wards are located in a three-storey oval pavilion sitting in a large ‘floating garden enclosing sheltered courtyard gardens. The Diagnostic, Emergency, Therapy and Outpatient Departments are located in a podium beneath this. They are planned around a 4-storey concourse that provides a focal point for wayfinding and circulation. Multiple gardens and courtyards can be accessed from the outpatient waiting spaces, therapy areas, parents accommodation and hospital school. The building will be transformational for the provision of paediatric care in Ireland.
