St Mary’s Community Nursing Unit

The design for St. Mary’s Community Nursing Unit in the Phoenix Park sets out a new approach for the development of community/elderly residential care homes, placing the patient experience at the core from architectural concept to building completion.

The new 4,500m2 elderly residential unit building provides 100 beds, the majority of which are in single rooms with en-suite facilities, supported by therapy, living and social spaces. The design concept was to develop a modern organisational model for residential care units which addressed the needs of elderly patients and carers.

The design strategy proposed a series of modular blocks which included a central foyer/communal space module, ward modules of 25 bed wards enclosing central courtyard spaces, and a further module of support spaces. The approach allowed great flexibility in the placement and layout of the wards by reference to the central and support spaces and allowed the building to adapt to site and brief constraints in different locations.

The design of the wards is essential to the success of the units. Circulation is wrapped around a central courtyard in a traditional cloister form, and no individual room is remote from the central communal and support spaces. Bedrooms face east, south or west, are not overlooked and enjoy maximum sunlight throughout the year. The internal layout of the rooms allows both clear visual connection to the patient and the provision of calm personal space with views and access to private gardens.

The modular layout also supported innovative solutions in design and construction, including the use of prefabricated wall construction enabling speedy construction and assembly. It was delivered within 12 months from the appointment of the architect, through a design and build contract.

The layout with emphasis on natural light and single loaded corridors also ensured the building was universally accessible and suitable for use by elderly patients. The design concept served as a model project for many later HSE units throughout the country.
