This redevelopment of the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore involved significant three to four storey structure which expands the fine existing hospital building designed by Michael Scott in the early 1940’s.
The new building accommodates a Main Entrance Concourse centrally situated at the mid-point of the three storey Hospital Street from which a series of courtyard buildings are accessed each of which houses the various Hospital Departments which include in-Patient Wards and service facilities such as CSSD, Laboratories, Pharmacy and the Mortuary. The project also provides for the alteration and refurbishment of the existing Chapel, which is a protected structure.
The design maximizes the use of natural light and ventilation by way of the courtyards, providing a cheerful and therapeutic environment for the delivery of health care services. Externally the new hospital is set in a landscaped campus within easy walking distance of the town centre with a boulevard of trees leading visitors to the main hospital entrance and to the public and staff car park which are both clearly visible on arrival at the site.
As a conceptual design the hospital is a synthesis of clinical functions within a matrix of architecturally resolved public spaces through which the social and therapeutic ethos of the building is expressed against the criterion of clinical efficiency.
