Munster Surgical Hubs

The purpose of the Surgical Hubs is to provide standalone, elective day-care capacity in centres across the country, thus alleviating pressure on waiting lists. Located in Cork, Waterford and Limerick, the hubs deliver a standardised design via rapid procurement and build methods.

Each Hub contains circa 6000m2 of accommodation in its part 3, part 2 story volume as well as a standalone services compound, parking and landscape interventions. The primary accommodation is situated at Level 01 including 4 operating theatres, treatment and procedure rooms, minor procedures and recovery areas. This accommodation has been elevated to Level 01 in order to achieve important clinical flows within the building, with stores, ancillary and staff accommodation all located a Ground Floor Level below.

The massing of the hubs has been broken into 2 distinct blocks – this aids the architectural articulation of the building while also providing functional separation between the aseptic and post-procedure recovery areas. Plant is concentrated on the roof of the aseptic block, where it is most required, allowing the recovery block to remain at 2 storeys and reducing the overall visual impact of the building. The two blocks are connected by glazed links and the void between creates opportunities for a landscaped courtyard at the heart of the plan. The two main blocks are clad in a fibre cement rain screen system on a precast frame in order to achieve the rapid build programme.

OCMA led an integrated design team that worked closely with the HSE and JJ Rhatigan as D&B partners to deliver a transformative project aimed at enhancing surgical capacity and improving patient care across Ireland. An overall delivery programme of less than 3 years from our appointment to the projected completion on site sets a remarkable standard in focused delivery of critical healthcare infrastructure.
