The project involved the fit-out of an existing shell building to create a new Emergency Department and Renal Department at University Hospital Limerick (UHL).
The shell was developed in 2013 as part of UHL’s Protective Development Control Plan to align with the hospital’s urban edge strategy. The existing structural design accommodated the potential for vertical expansion, allowing for four additional floors for future ward accommodation. The project transformed the ground and first-floor shell space of the building into fully functional medical facilities with service connections to the existing hospital.
The 3,600m² Emergency Department includes 47 triage and treatment bays, as well as x-ray and resuscitation areas while the Renal Unit provided an additional 1,800 m² of clinical and ancillary accommodation. A phased execution of the works ensured the hospital remained fully operational throughout construction, requiring meticulous coordination to manage interfaces with live medical services on campus.
Completed in 2017, the facility now operates as a vital part of UHL, meeting modern healthcare standards with state-of-the-art infrastructure and medical services.
