UHL 96 Bed Acute Inpatient Ward Block Extension

Located on the hospital’s western edge along St. Nessan’s Road, the architecture of the new 96 Bed Ward Block is carefully integrated with its surroundings while providing exemplary single-bed patient rooms. The design intentionally contrasts mass and lightness, aiming for a distinctive “floating” glass volume above the existing stone plinth. The façade is comprised of white glazing to reference the original 1955 hospital buildings while blending with the surrounding sky thus softening the building’s scale. This approach forms a strong visual presence while creating a contemporary urban edge along St. Nessan’s Road reflecting the civic prominence of the Regional Hospital.

The 96-bed Acute Ward Block which extends four storeys over the existing car park, Emergency, and Renal Departments, will fulfil the planned vertical expansion envisioned in the original UHL development. The underlying structure, completed in 2017, was specifically designed to support this upward expansion, enabling levels -02 through 02 to remain fully operational during construction.

The existing plant room extends on Level 2 and accommodates 24 single ensuites across each Level on 03 to 06 created by a “L” shape wards. The bedrooms are located on the external facades, either facing into the courtyard to the South and East, to St. Nessan’s Road to the West or towards the North to the future expansion zone. Support space is proposed within the centre of the race-track layout, along with two lightwells bringing natural light into the depth of the ward.

The expanded facility enhances patient experience, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency while reinforcing the hospital’s architectural integrity and role within the community.
