The Temple Street Surgical Procedures Suite was a technically challenging retrofit project whereby an existing recovery unit was converted into a new Surgical Procedures Suite, including a main Procedures Room, an Anaesthetic Room, a Preparation Room, a Dirty Utility, an integrated Scrub Room and associated enclosed Plantroom at Roof level.
The construction was undertaken while all hospital services remained live and active in the departments adjacent to, above and below the construction zone. The safety of the staff, child patients and visitors at every stage of their interaction with the hospital was central to the strategic planning and execution of the works. To facilitate this, and minimise the impact on staff and patients, an independent Contractor’s Compound access was set up in the adjacent Ground Floor level yard, with direct access through the existing windows at second level.
The procedures suite was delivered with meticulous attention to detail in order to address project-specific challenges such as the upgrade of existing external windows to provide radiation protection while maintaining the fire protection required due to the proximity of the proposal to the Campus Laboratory accommodation.
While the project was modest in size, it required great technical competency and knowledge of construction in live clinical environments. This alteration, within the existing live Theatre Department at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, provided a significant and much-needed enhancement to the existing theatre department provision.
